The Year 4s at our school take part in a special program called Kitchen Garden.
Our program aims to teach students about seasonable produce, how foods contribute to healthy bodies and minds and about how foods grow in our garden.
Stephanie Alexander is a renowned Australian chef and champion of Kitchen Garden programs in schools. Stephanie says, “pleasurable food education teaches students to grow, harvest, prepare and share fresh, seasonal, delicious food.” This is also our belief at New Gisborne Primary School.
Each week the Year 4 classes take it in turns to:
- cook a nutritious recipe that uses seasonal produce
- maintain the vegetable garden
- investigate science and health topics related to plants and food.
